Appraising diversity with an ordinal notion of similarity: An axiomatic approach

چکیده
This paper provides an axiomatic characterization of two rules for comparing alternative sets of objects on the basis of the diversity that they offer. The framework considered assumes a finite universe of objects and an a priori given ordinal quadernary relation that compares alternative pairs of objects on the basis of their ordinal dissimilarity. Very few properties of this quadernary relation are assumed (beside completeness, transitivity and a very natural form of symmetry). The two rules that we characterize are the maxi max criterion and the leximax criterion. The maxi max criterion considers that a set is more diverse than another if and only if the two objects that are the most dissimilar in the former are weakly as dissimilar as the two most dissimilar objects in the later. The lexi-max criterion is defined as usual as the lexicographic extension of the maximax criterion.

متن کاملYongsheng The Measurement of Diversity
The notion of diversity is an issue that is of relevance in several contexts. For example, the biodiversity of a given ecological environment and the diversity of the options available to a decision maker have attracted some attention in recent research. This paper provides an axiomatic approach to the measurement of diversity. We characterize two nested classes of ordinal measures of diversity...

متن کاملAn axiomatic approach to social ranking under coalitional power relations
In the literature of coalitional games, power indices have been widely used to assess the influence that a player has in situations where coalitions may be winning or losing. However, in many cases things are not so simple as that: in some practical situations, all that we know about coalitions is a relative comparison of strength. For instance, we know that a football team is stronger than ano...
متن کاملSimilarity DH-Algebras
In cite{GL}, B. Gerla and I. Leuc{s}tean introduced the notion of similarity on MV-algebra. A similarity MV-algebra is an MV-algebra endowed with a binary operation $S$ that verifies certain additional properties. Also, Chirtec{s} in cite{C}, study the notion of similarity on L ukasiewicz-Moisil algebras. In particular, strong similarity L ukasiewicz-Moisil algebras were defined. In this paper...
